By Julia Evans IT MAY be a bit of a drive from Lincoln to the Christchurch Yacht Club. But Mike Brown said it wouldn’t be a proper summer without loading two of his daughters, a few towels and some food into the car to make the half hour trip to

Moncks Bay. He was heading back to work the following day. So the afternoon out was one last hurrah on his holiday break. “You’ve just got to spend summer around the water, it wouldn’t be right otherwise,” he said. Mr Brown’s twin daughters,

Jaz and Montana, 14, enjoyed the swim. “It’s good for the girls. The water is really good for them,” he said. Jaz seemed a bit of a water baby, but the cool temperature meant it took a little more convincing before Montana hit the water. In fact, Mr Brown had to throw her in.

“You’re going in, don’t worry,” he said as she went in with a great splash. Fortunately for Montana and Jaz, there was one tradition that they could look forward to after a day in the sun. “There’s nothing like coming down here and we always get a big ice cream on the way home,” Mr Brown said.

By Emily O’Connell WEEDONS residents are backing their Templeton neighbours in a bid to stop plans for a new quarry development. Two weeks ago, Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a quarry on a 170ha section of land on Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds which borders Weedons and Templeton. More than 200 people gathered in St Saviour’s Anglican Church on Kirk Rd on Wednesday to discuss the proposal. Weedons Residents’ Association secretary Gary Doyle said the group will be supporting its Templeton neighbours as much as it can. “All we can do is try and fight it as well,” he said. Mr Doyle said traffic is going to be a major problem for the area. “Maddisons Rd and Jones Rd are not suitable for a lot of heavy traffic, they’re not wide enough,” he said. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said Wednesday’s meeting was very successful. •Turn to page 6

The quarry is in the Selwyn District but the people who will be affected most by any potential dust are in Templeton – Christchurch city turf. The Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury will sign off consents, which means Templeton people will desperately need help from their Weedons neighbours. While the ownership of the Sheffield Community Hall is to be legally transferred over to the district council, it has assured residents if it was to ever sell the building, it will be offered back to the community first. CAR LANDS UPSIDE DOWN The driver of a vehicle which flipped and landed upside down on a railway line in Dunsandel walked away with minor injuries. The car landed directly on the railway line which intersects Main South Rd on a sharp corner before the Dunsandel township on Friday before 6am. Ambulance staff assessed and treated a 20-year-old female at the scene. Dunsandel chief fire officer Ian Chatterton said while he didn’t want to speculate, the driver may have been going too fast. Selwyn Times was unable to contact police in time for comment. FIRE STATION CALL OUTS The Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade has released the number of fire call-outs it attended last year. The station attended a total of 514 calls between January 1 and December 31. The fire station attended 13 structure fires, 43 vegetation fires, one rescue, two heat/pressure-related calls, 218 medical calls, four hazardous material calls, 30 special services, five public assistance calls, 45 vehicle accidents, 122 false alarms and three calls not recorded.

Councillors give their big plans District councillors have outlined their top priorities for 2018. Georgia O’Connor-Harding reports A NEW health hub and town centre for Rolleston are key priorities for the district council this year. Selwyn Times asked district councillors what the most important issues were districtwide and in their wards. District councillors Pat McEvedy and Grant Miller are both working to get the health hub up and running in Rolleston. Cr McEvedy said he wants to “keep pushing along” the project. “I think that is a Selwynwide project that will benefit everybody,” he said. The health hub is in the district council’s Annual Plan and aims to improve access to healthcare and social services for Selwyn residents. Cr Miller said it is essential that a growing area like Selwyn has enough medical and social services to meet the needs of residents. “I am pretty confident we are

going to get it over the line,” he said. Cr Miller said it is likely the health hub will be operating in 2019. This year the district council will be working on the design, securing tenants and a business case. Meanwhile, district councillor Craig Watson is calling for work to get under way on building a new town square in Rolleston. It is his bid to put a “heart” into Selwyn, he said. “Rolleston now has become the centre of Selwyn as far as population is concerned and we don’t have a town centre,” he said. His views are backed by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall who said it is critical the Rolleston town centre master plan is up and running. Cr Watson said there are few places in the last 20-30 years which have had the opportunity to build a town centre and it is important they get it right. “We don’t want it to be a

Key focuses in the Malvern Ward included road maintenance and continuing to upgrade narrow roads which are heavily used by trucks and tankers, district councillor John Morten said. He said any road that is a main thoroughfare to the Fonterra factory in Darfield is a concern – including Telegraph and Leaches Rds. Long-term, Cr Morten wants a reticulated sewage system to be installed in Darfield at a cost affordable to residents.

Darfield to Christchurch service in December due to increased costs and falling patronage. The Darfield survey aims to find an alternative solution to the ceased bus service. Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said he does not know whether the West Melton and Darfield bus services would be viable. “I haven’t seen their proposal at this stage . . . we have certainly said if we ran a trial it would be a short-term trial and if there wasn’t the support it would come to an end,” he said. It comes as public transport advocate Bus Go Canterbury survey residents if they would like a bus service from Ellesmere to Christchurch. Bus Go co-founder Nick Stoneman said since the Ellesmere survey was launched last week, it has gone “completely utterly nuts” receiving 80 responses so far. “It has been 21 years since Leeston had a service. Southbridge has probably been the same length of time. Dunsandel hasn’t had a service since 2001. That is what prompted it,” he said. Mr Stoneman said if the service is successful it will likely encompass Leeston, Southbridge and Dunsandel. The group is also surveying West Melton and Darfield on a bus service to Christchurch. District councillor Murray Lemon said it is important business opportunities are created throughout the entire Selwyn district. In the Springs ward, a key priority for Cr Lyall is ensuring funding remains in the Long Term Plan 2018-2028 for a new hall and community centre in Prebbleton. Consultation on the Long Term Plan will start this year. Cr Lyall said money also needs to be spent on improving intersections, roundabouts and traffic lights in the Prebbleton area, and funding also needs to be established for the Lincoln town centre plan. Cr Miller said he would like to see car parking improved in Lincoln before further work on the town plan begins. Lincoln businesses are worried about the removal of 75 car parks on Gerald St which was approved as part of the plan. He said he would also like to see the $206 million research centre at Lincoln University up and running.

In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25 to 40 years. “We see this location as being suitable because the site has few neighbours and is close to State Highway 1.” Mr Alexander had a suggestion for the association’s group: “My advice is to form a new, separate, incorporated society to submit against these consent

Honeymooners plunge 20m off SH73 By Andrew King A FRENCH couple will never forget their honeymoon in New Zealand after managing to walk away from their vehicle after it plunged 20m down a bank. The couple, in their mid20s, were heading towards the West Coast on State Highway 73, Springfield, when their vehicle left the road. Another motorist saw

the incident and reported it to emergency services. “They are so lucky they walked away with only minor back and seat belt injuries,” a Westpac Rescue Helicopter intensive care paramedic said. “Also, they were lucky someone saw them go off the road as there were no visible signs there had been a crash.” The couple’s vehicle was wedged down the bank, which was fortunate as it

could have tumbled a lot further, the paramedic said. They were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital as a precaution and were shaken up over the ordeal, he said. The Springfield, Kirwee and Sheffield volunteer fire brigades attended the scene with police. Chief fire officer Grant Williams said it was amazing the couple walked away uninjured.

SOME PEOPLE will write about the loss of water races and the effect on the wildlife. I have an alternative perspective that many do not consider. Water races were introduced to the Canterbury Plains that lacked reliable flowing streams to enable stock to be farmed on the parched land in summer. The water races served a dual purpose and that was to provide an alternative means of household water to supplement the capture of rain water in areas where the underground water table was inaccessible such as Darfield. Most houses that were supplied with race water had a third tap in the kitchen for drinking water fed from a tank that collected the rain water. Before the water races, drains were dug to ensure that settlements were not flooded in the winter or in times of excessive rain due to roads being constructed with the crown of the road being higher than the land alongside. With the construction of the water races sometimes existing drains were utilised to carry the water, especially in the townships, so they served to carry both the water race and stormwater. As time progressed, the water races became a habitat for creatures that either lived in the water or relied on the availability of access to water for sustainability.

In the towns some people beautified the races by maintaining the edges and some even planted flowers or special grasses. Eventually potable water supplies became available and the need for water races in the towns became obsolete. With reliable water supplies, the water races were closed off. This meant that more water was available to a system that was stretched in the summer months to supply water for stock as originally intended with some stormwater being disposed of by soak pits where there was a low water table. Turning off the water in these races left a channel where the water used to run, resulting in a call from the residents to fill them in. Filling in a race that was not a dual purpose one was not a problem, but there were many that provided drainage in the wet season and only carried water when the rainfall was more than the land could absorb. If there happened to be

a few dry seasons in a row the drain would appear to be not needed and the original reason for it being there in the first place was forgotten. Calls would be made to have this particular channel filled in as it now served no purpose. This is what happened on Bealey Rd in Hororata. After the channel was filled in there was no apparent problem as the wet seasons were not sufficient to cause major flooding. How wrong could this thinking be; the area along Bealey Rd has been inundated with surface water that has nowhere to go due to the drain being filled and no alternative provided to remove the excess water. The district council has lost several legal proceedings and spent well over $80,000 and still the two properties on the corner of Hawkins and Bealey Rd flood in severe wet conditions and the houses fronting onto Bealey Rd have excess water problems with septic tanks and stormwater. None of this flooding took place when the drain along Bealey Rd was operational. Yet the district council still continues to ignore this situation.

Drivers should now expect it to take at least 5 ½ to 6 hours to drive between Picton and Christchurch on SH1 but should allow plenty of extra time in case of delays. RECENT RAIN has eased the fire risk across the district. But authorities say it will only take a few hot nor’westerly days to push it up again. “There is still a lot of summer to go and conditions can change quickly,’’ said Darrin Woods, Christchurch/Selwyn rural fire district principal rural fire officer. He said if the weather returns to as it was before Christmas, when temperatures were routinely in the high-20s and early 30s, the countryside will very quickly dry out, escalating the fire risk. “We’re also asking that on hot days, particularly when it’s windy, people take extreme care when doing any activities that may produce sparks such as grinding, welding or even mowing lawns on stony ground,’’ Mr Woods said. It is important people report any fires or smoke to 111 immediately, he said. A restricted fire season has been in place across Christchurch, Selwyn, Hurunui and Waimakariri districts since the start of December. This means people must apply for a permit if they want to light a fire in open air. Anyone who lights a fire with-

out a permit can expect a visit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. It will extinguish any fire that does not meet the conditions of the restricted fire season. But it was his 15-year-old friend, Ransley, who put on a show. He showed great speed in the first race to finish fourth, before crossing the line just behind title contender Michael Scott in the second race. He saved his best for last with an uncontested win in the third race, leading from start to finish – his first win of the series. Ransley said it was one to remember. “To not only get my first race win, but my first round win in front of all my supporters and sponsors was an amazing feeling,” he said. SPORTS A DREAM came true for a young cricket fan last week. Rolleston resident Sophie Forward, 7, joined captains Kane Williamson and Sarfraz Ahmed on the pitch for the coin toss before the Black Caps vs Pakistan match to help decide the batting and bowling order in Nelson. Sophie attends West Rolleston Primary School and likes watching cricket on the weekends and playing after school. She loves all sports and hopes to become a teacher when she is older. “My favourite part was getting to hand Kane Williamson the coin, he is my favourite cricketer,” she said. ANZ head of sponsorship Sue McGregor said Sophie was one of 27 kids selected to take part in the pivotal pre-match moment during this year’s summer of

cricket. “We hope that connecting young players with their heroes will help inspire the next generation of Kiwi cricketers. There’s a magic that happens when fans take part in the match and meet these great players. We try to get these young cricketers involved as much as we can,” she said. Working together for a positive school year A positive attitude to learning is fundamental for laying down the foundations for success throughout a child’s school years. Fostering a supportive attitude to education in the home, translates to children being more enthusiastic about attending school and making the most of their learning experiences so they become mature self-directed learners. Being prepared for school supports this. Wearing the correct clean and tidy uniform, having the right equipment, having established routines at home where homework is regularly completed with bags packed and lunches prepared the night before, and arriving at school on time, are all important. Such practises build positive attitudes, while avoiding missing lessons ensures a child acquires the underpinning knowledge and skills essential for future learning. Encourage your child with praise not pressure, helping them to develop problem solving skills where they work things out for themselves, in their play and school work.

If unsure about any aspect of your child’s time at school ask questions and encourage your child to do the same. Adopt a diplomatic approach. If your child complains about any aspect of school life, take time to learn the facts bringing any concerns to the attention of their teacher to ensure resolution so your child flourishes and enjoys their time at school.

From Monday 29 January, over 9,500 Selwyn children will be travelling to school, up from 8,000 from 2017! Selwyn School Road Safety Co-ordinator Stephanie Hautler is reminding everyone to keep their eyes peeled for our young people heading back to school by bus, bike, car, scooter and on foot. With the lovely summer weather it’s a great opportunity to get active with your child. Even if you are pushed for time parking a block back from school so your child can scoot or walk is good for them both physically and mentally, develops their road safety skills and helps with overall congestion at the school gate. “Road safety awareness is a pretty important life skill and starts developing

when you are young. Take every opportunity to educate children on how to cross a road and watch for cars coming out of driveways” says Ms Hautler. “The safety of all children is paramount,” says Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police. “Police will be patrolling outside schools and pre-schools to reduce the risk posed by speeding vehicles, illegal parking and dangerous driving manoeuvres whilst everyone gets used to children being back at school.” Road safety resources for parents and children are available from Selwyn District Council. Broadfield School has a history of 150 years of learning and achievement, something the school’s community along with past students and teachers will celebrate during the second weekend in March. A theatrical celebration for the children and community will be held at the school, on Friday 9th March. In the evening, past students and attendees will share a social time of Chatter and Platter. On the Saturday morning, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the nearby award winning Broadfield Gardens, followed by morning tea and Jubilee photos then a dinner will be held that evening at the Lincoln Events Centre. As part of the Jubilee, a School Fete with a country style theme will be held on the Sunday from 10am until 3pm. To advertise the Fete and raise money for a covered outdoor area, a sponsored scare crow display has been set up in a nearby paddock,

something that has been a fun community event. The new building, which became op e r at i ona l in 2017, has been a tremendous addition for the students and staff at Broadfield School who have enjoyed the beautiful modern space with lots of natural light, breakout spaces for the children to work in, and a divider wall that can be opened up or closed depending on learning needs. At the close of 2017, the school farewelled Principal, Mike Molloy, with a new Principal due to start in 2018 signalling a new era for a school that has been around for 150 years.

Lincoln Abroad

In 2018, Lincoln High School students will have some amazing opportunities to experience other cultures. Seventeen students and two staff members will travel to China in April on a trip organised by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury, and supported by the Office of the Chinese Language Council International. During their two week stay, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Chinese language and culture. In the July holidays, twenty students and two staff members will visit Samoa. The focus of their trip will be on social action through community work, while experiencing what it is like to live and attend school in a different culture. For twenty-five year 12 and 13 Classical

Studies students, visiting places like the Roman Forum in Rome or the Acropolis in Greece, will greatly enhance their understanding of the connections between the cultural history of Western Europe and New Zealand in the 21st century. Lastly, there will be some significant challenges, including physically and mentally, for the 33 students and four staff members who will be visiting Nepal for three weeks at the end of the year. Students will spend one of the three weeks undertaking community volunteer work while an important aspect of this World Challenge expedition is that all the planning, including the itinerary, budget and accommodation is completed by the students, along with fundraising for the cost of the trip.

Rolleston’s New principal for Windwhistle 1st school School Since opening in 1893, Rolleston’s oldest school has grown from one large wooden building and 46 students to a modern school environment catering for the educational needs of well over 800 students. Two new purpose-built teaching spaces were added to Rolleston School (Te Ahi Kaiomako) in 2017 and an app allowing parents and caregivers easy access to school information. With an ethos of striving, driving and thriving students at Rolleston School learn to become ‘express’ learners who are engaged, resourceful, self-managed and prepared to experiment and persist until they achieve success.

At the close of 2017, the Windwhistle School community farewelled their Principal of seven years, Frances Nimmo. The school’s new Principal, Bronwen Seaward previously fulfilled a number of teaching and management roles at Darfield High School, and more recently at West Melton Primary School. The school’s role will increase in 2018 with the new students joining a happy school community where individual needs are recognised and met, and there is considerable support from parents and extended family, many of whom also attended Windwhistle School.

After an amazing foundation year, welcoming new learners and their whanau into Lemonwood Grove, the school looks forward to its second year of establishment. “Families are moving into Selwyn from around Canterbury, New Zealand and across the globe leading to a diverse and unique school community and culture,” says Principal, Sean Bailey. Enrolment is expected to be close to 160 at the start of 2018 however, during the year this figure is likely to rise due to the building activity in Faringdon. At Lemonwood Grove, the school’s curriculum is lived out through its school wide values of Grit, Responsibility, Integrity and Thinking. “It’s great to see our learners demonstrating these values when collaborating and relating to others,” says Sean. During the foundation year a number of school events and experiences were held with outstanding support from the community. A number of schools and organisations also visited Lemonwood Grove, interested in how learners’ needs are met, and their curiosity and creativity sparked.

Lemonwood Grove is fortunate to be part of a ‘Community of Learning’ where they work closely with 11 neighbouring schools to increase student achievement. Exciting changes for Ellesmere College Some exciting changes are in store for the Ellesmere College community this year.

At the end of 2017, the school farewelled Gavin Kidd, a Principal who hugely influenced the school during his time at Ellesmere College with the introduction of new innovations while gaining respect for his quiet purposeful leadership. First task for the Board of Trustees in 2018 is finding a new Principal who can carry the school forward, a process that will involve the whole school community. Plans are also in place for a new building at Ellesmere College with construction expected to begin soon. As the new school will be constructed on the fields, there will be no disruption to student learning while the football field and athletics tracks will be moved so the sports programme is not affected. AS THE warm months take hold, gardeners should be reaping the rewards of what was sown and planted months ago. Many crops will be in ‘harvest mode’, such as courgettes, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, brassicas, herbs and so many more. To keep long-term fruiting crops (such as beans, tomatoes and courgettes) producing, you need to keep picking the

seaweed tonic give the seedlings a head start as well.

STRAWBERRIES Maximise your harvest by giving plants a once over now to remove any dead or tatty leaves and to cut the runners off from the main parent plant. Apply a side-dressing of strawberry food (if you haven’t already) and give the plants a deep watering at least twice a week. A top up of mulch or compost is a good idea too, and refresh your layers of straw especially if the birds have skived off with it to make nests. If you have spent a bit of time away from home, your gardens will more than likely be ready for a bit of TLC. Here are our top garden tasks to help get your garden back into tip top shape.

If your plants have been in for a while now, it might pay to add some fertiliser or organic matter to the soil to help keep the nutrient supply available for them to sustain healthy growth.

If you haven’t done so already, stake up your tomatoes to give them that extra support. Remove any laterals (side-ways growing shoots) and any excess leaves that are accumulating at the bottom of the plant. This will help to create more space for airflow and light to get in.

REAA - Disclosure rules Show when selling a home home

Real estate advertisements are designed to make every property look like a dream buy. That’s why they gloss over the negative aspects and linger on the good points, wanting you to be drawn in by the sundrenched location rather than be put off by lack of garaging. It’s no crime to gloss over a property’s quirks, but lying by omission or design about more serious matters is not allowed. If you do this when selling your property you may be at risk of being sued by the purchaser. When you’re ready to sell your property it’s a good idea to get legal advice about your obligations before you sign an agency agreement. Most of these agreements, which set out the terms and conditions of your contract with the real estate agent, require you to confirm that you are unaware of any undisclosed defects in the property and that you haven’t withheld any information about it. As a seller, you must also confirm that your property has all the necessary consents and code compliance certificates for any building work. Any outstanding consents, including ones that involve any works at a neighbour’s property, should be disclosed to the agent. This is important for several reasons. Licensed real estate agents have clear obligations when it comes to disclosure. They must not mislead a seller or a potential buyer, or withhold any information. While it’s not up to the agent to uncover any hidden defects in a property, they must tell any prospective buyers what they know. Under the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, if licensed real estate agents suspect that a property may have a defect then they are obliged to ask the seller about it, or advise potential buyers of any risks.
